Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi has regained consciousness after being placed in an induced coma, following surgery to treat a serious abdominal injury.
Awoniyi sustained a ruptured intestine during a match and underwent the first stage of surgery on Monday. To monitor his recovery, doctors placed him in an induced coma on Tuesday.
The second stage of the operation, which involved closing the surgical wound, was carried out successfully on Wednesday.
BBC Sport reports that Awoniyi’s recovery is progressing well, with medical staff closely monitoring his condition. The club has yet to issue an official statement, but sources confirm the striker is now awake and stable.
Awoniyi’s return to full fitness will depend on further medical assessments, but early signs are said to be positive.
