The Kurdistan People’s Party ( PKK) today disclosed its plan to disarm, disband and end its insurgency against the state of Turkiye(Turkey).
The news has been received with elation by the government of President Tayyip Erdogan, which had fought the group for decades in one of the longest military conflict in.modern history.
The PKK is a major part of the Turkish coalition by the acronym of KCk, and the only one to have openly borne arm against the state of Turkiye.
Apparently, the decision to disband, disarm and end insurgency was taken at the weekend during a session – the 12th- of the party in Northern Iraq, where it has a strong physical and military presence .
The PKK, founded by now jailed Abdulla Ocholan, has been waving a war against the Turkish state in its struggle for Kurdistan autonomy and independence.
But after 41 years of violent struggle that has led to the death of thousands of people on both sides, it now says it needed to disarm and end the agitation.
Ocholan had, in a surprise move earlier this year, called for a Congress of the party to end the conflict, citing enhancement in the status of Kurdistan.
His call was obviously heeded at the weekend, leading, in part, to the earth- shaking decisions that may still take years to fully implement.
It remained unclear ,at press time, if the decision was pegged on the release from solitary confinement in jail of Ocholan over the past 20 years.
Full implementation of the PKK decision is expected to enhance internal security in Turkiye, and improve its relations with Iraq and the United States of America.
Like Turkiye, both America and The European Union had classified the PKK as a terrorist organization.
