Abuja, Nigeria – The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called for an upward review of the retirement age for all categories of civil servants to 65 years or 40 years of service.
The demand was made by NLC President, Joe Ajaero, during the 2025 May Day celebration held at Eagle Square in Abuja.
Presenting the union’s position, Ajaero emphasized the need to harmonize retirement policies across the public sector.
“It is imperative to extend the revised retirement age of 65 years or 40 years of service currently applicable to teachers, health professionals, and judges, to all public servants,” he said.
This is not the first time the NLC has raised the issue. In 2023, Ajaero affirmed the union’s commitment to engaging with President Bola Tinubu’s administration to achieve the policy change.
Currently, public school teachers across federal, state, and local levels are benefiting from the extended retirement age, a reform enacted under former President Muhammadu Buhari.
