The All Progressives Congress (APC) has increased its strength in the Edo State House of Assembly to 15 following the defection of Hon. Nicholas Asonsere, the lawmaker representing Ikpoba/Okha constituency.
Formerly elected under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Asonsere cited Governor Monday Okpebholo’s development initiatives especially a flyover project in his constituency as his reason for switching political allegiance.
Speaking, the former PDP lawmaker stressed that, “It would be wrong for someone to be developing my constituency, constructing a flyover bridge and for me to stand aside and not support his effort. That would mean I’m not committed to the growth of the constituency or the people I represent. Therefore, I must lend my support, rally our people, and ensure we collectively back the governor so he can complete the important projects he has started in our area.”
Asonsere said his decision was self-motivated, stressing the importance of supporting ongoing development efforts in his constituency.
His move follows earlier defections of four PDP lawmakers and one Labour Party (LP) member, significantly altering the Assembly’s composition. The APC now stands one member short of a two-thirds majority, positioning it to potentially control principal leadership roles.
Welcoming Asonsere, APC State Acting Chairman Jarret Tenebe described the defection as a major political shift and a blow to the PDP. He urged PDP members to embrace collaboration for the development of the State.
